Koi are thought to originate in the Middle Eastern region now known as Iran from a species of fish called Magoi, the common carp. The meaning of the Koi fish is often a mystery to those outside of Japan. In myth, the very strong koi will be able to swim upstream and leap the waterfalls, being rewarded at the end of the journey by being turned into a dragon.

In some countries, koi have caused so much damage to waterways that vast amounts of money and effort have been spent trying to eradicate them, largely unsuccessfully. But this little fellow found the secret to survival. Koi are an omnivorous fish and will often eat a wide variety of foods, including peas, lettuce, and watermelon. Koi are descendants of the common carp, Cyprinus Carpio. Earliest records of Koi have been found in China and have been widely spread in Korea and Japan.
